The existing sport and fitness facility was considered mission essential in maintaining the health and well-being of United States Air Force operatives at RAF Alconbury. Templeman Design provided an option study to allow the client to prioritise and establish their requirements and project values.
A project was undertaken to refurbish and upgrade the existing facility. The design and construction team were faced with the challenge of keeping the facility in operation whilst the proposed works were undertaken. A successful phasing plan allowed the work to be carried out in 2 stages.
Stage 1 – The Proposal required modification to the principal front entrance and reception area to provide a welcoming focal point to the facility. Primary circulation routes were renegotiated to create a dynamic flow from the reception area and through activity spaces to help promote the services that the facility provides.
Welfare facilities including toilets, showering and changing areas required intricate space planning to make best use of the space within existing building constraints, but accommodate an increased occupancy load.
Stage 2 – The requirement for extra floor space led to the installation of a new first floor area to provide a new fitness studio.
Templeman Design were appointed by the principal contractor to provide a detailed design package whilst leasing closely onsite with the end users agent. The result provides a sport and fitness facility that maximises space and use within an existing building, with particular attention to the finer details.
